Moderation and Reporting Policy

This policy explains how to report a problem, how moderators decide what action to take, and how to appeal a decision.

Who moderates VNC.com

The moderation team is a mix of VNC.com or RealVNC staff and appointed community moderators. Appointed moderators receive guidance on the site policies and should act consistently, protect private report information, and disclose a conflict that could affect a decision.

This structure does not commit VNC.com to a particular number of moderators or coverage schedule. Moderation capacity may vary with community activity and the complexity of open reports.

How to report content

Email abuse@vnc.com. Include a link to the exact post so moderators have the context they need. The same address covers a profile, a private interaction, an exposed credential, or any other problem.

Include the URL, the username involved, a brief description of the concern, and any relevant date or time. Explain which part of the Community Guidelines or Acceptable Use Policy may apply. Attach only evidence you are entitled to share. Redact passwords, license keys, personal data, and unrelated private conversation.

Urgent situations

If a post exposes a working credential or private key, revoke or rotate it immediately. A moderation report cannot make a copied secret safe. For an immediate threat to someone’s safety, contact the appropriate local emergency service. VNC.com reporting channels are not emergency services.

Do not repost harmful content to call attention to it. A direct report gives moderators the information without increasing its reach.

What happens after a report

An acknowledgment confirms receipt, not a final decision. Review time depends on the available evidence, risk, context, and whether further information is needed. This policy sets no response-time target.

A moderator reviews the reported material against the current site rules and considers context, severity, likely harm, previous related action, and whether a narrower response can resolve the issue. Moderators may ask the reporter or account holder for clarification. Private details about another member or internal security measures will not normally be shared.

Possible outcomes

Escalation ladder for low-level gatekeeping: public reframe → private note → removal → suspension. A steward starts with the narrowest step likely to restore a useful discussion; serious or repeated harm can skip steps. Read the separate roles and moderation ladder for role definitions and a worked example.

Outcome When it may be used
No action The content does not violate a policy or evidence is insufficient
Content edit or removal A specific passage, attachment, or post creates the problem
Warning The member needs a clear direction to change behavior
Suspension A temporary account restriction is needed to stop harm or repeated violations
Ban Conduct is severe, persistent, deceptive, or incompatible with safe participation

More than one outcome may apply. Serious cases can lead directly to suspension or a ban. Content may also be preserved privately when needed to investigate abuse, document a decision, or meet a legal obligation.

Appeals

A member affected by a warning, removal, suspension, or ban may appeal by emailing moderation@vnc.com. Identify the decision, provide the relevant account and content details, and explain why the decision should change. New evidence should be included with the appeal.

A different moderator will review the appeal. The reviewer considers the original material, the reason recorded for the action, the appeal, and the policies that applied at the time. The result may uphold, change, or reverse the action. Repeated messages that add no new information do not create additional reviews.

Records and transparency

Moderation actions are logged so decisions can be reviewed for consistency and appeals can be handled from a reliable record. Aggregate totals will be summarized in community updates. Summaries may cover reports and outcome types, but will not identify reporters or disclose private account information.
