VNC vs RDP

Start with the screen you need to reach. VNC has independent implementations across operating systems; sharing a local screen or using a virtual desktop depends on the server. RD Session Host gives each user an isolated session on Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016. Compare the implementation and session mode before choosing.

Consider VNC for implementations across operating systems, checking whether the chosen server shares an existing screen or creates a virtual desktop. Consider RDP with RD Session Host for separate user sessions on Windows Server, accounting for RDS client access licences.

Which protocol should you choose?

For separate Windows Server sessions, consider RDP. Microsoft documents isolated sessions for users of RD Session Host in Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016. Microsoft, Welcome to Remote Desktop Services (30 Oct 2025).

Consider VNC when you need independent implementations across operating systems. Its published RFB specification, RFC 6143 describes viewing and controlling a window system on another computer. The server implementation determines whether that is a local screen or a virtual desktop. RFC published March 2011.

How do their display and session models differ?

Framebuffer and display commands

VNC uses the Remote Framebuffer (RFB) protocol to send screen updates as encoded pixel rectangles. RFC 6143 (March 2011) defines the framebuffer model. For Linux/Unix (X11), TigerVNC 1.16.2 offers x0vncserver, which shares an existing X display, and Xvnc, which uses a virtual screen. A virtual screen does not reproduce the physical console.

Microsoft documents graphics encoding in MS-RDPEGFX (updated 11 Aug 2025). For Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016, Remote Desktop Services gives each RD Session Host user an isolated session. That session model differs from sharing an existing display.

Authentication and transport limits

RFC 6143 (March 2011) specifies that VNC Authentication truncates the password to eight characters. RFB as defined there provides no protection against observation or tampering with the data stream. These limits describe the specification, not every implementation. RFC 6143, sections 7.2.2 and 9.

For RDP, Microsoft documents Network Level Authentication (NLA) when Enhanced RDP Security uses CredSSP. Microsoft, MS-RDPBCGR, Enhanced RDP Security (updated 7 Apr 2025). This capability is not a statement of the default configuration or a safety guarantee. Encryption and authentication must be assessed for the selected implementation and configuration.

Deployment review boundary

Before approving either deployment, record the implementation, release, OS, and session mode. Ask for evidence of who can start access, consent and session visibility, and the network path. Record how access is logged and revoked, the identity and policy requirements, and the support escalation owner.

Consider VNC when

  • Your endpoints span multiple platforms
  • You need to share an existing display and have checked the server session mode
  • You want open, independent implementations

Consider RDP when

  • You administer Windows systems
  • You need multi-user desktops on Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016. Microsoft RDS overview names RD Session Host and RD Licensing. Microsoft states that connections to an RD Session Host on Windows Server need an RDS CAL. Per-user and per-device RDS CAL types exist. License Remote Desktop Services with Client Access Licenses (CALs) (updated 2 Apr 2026).
