Remmina is an open-source remote desktop client for Linux and BSD under GPL-2.0+, with VNC, RDP, SSH, SPICE and X2Go connections. The latest release listed in this page’s spec card is 1.4.43, released 20 February 2026; its macOS work covers compiling and launching, with no official macOS or Windows package listed on this page. It connects to a separate server and can save connection profiles.
- Good for: personal projects and home labs that use saved connections to several remote desktop protocols and manage their own servers, authentication and updates.
- Consider RealVNC Connect when: your business depends on remote access and you need end-to-end encryption, centralised management and commercial support.
Where it is strong
- Several protocols in one client. Remmina v1.4.43 supports VNC, RDP, SSH, SPICE, and X2Go. See Remmina v1.4.43 README.
- Saved connection profiles. Each profile can retain its own connection and quality settings.
- SSH tunnel settings. In Remmina v1.4.43 builds with libssh, VNC profiles have an SSH Tunnel tab. See Remmina v1.4.43 profile editor.
- Linux packages. Remmina is packaged for Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora, and is available through Flathub. Package details are listed below.
- Desktop-oriented interface. Its GNOME-style UI is designed for managing and opening saved remote desktop connections.
- Remmina uses LibVNCClient for its VNC plugin. Source: Remmina v1.4.43 VNC plugin.
Where it stops
- Client only. Remmina connects to remote systems but does not provide a VNC server. This describes v1.4.43. Its VNCI listener accepts a connection initiated by a remote server; Remmina remains the viewer. Sources: Remmina v1.4.43 plugins and VNC listener source.
- Platform packages. No official Windows or macOS package was found in the v1.4.43 release assets or installation page. The v1.4.43 macOS changes cover compiling and launching Remmina. See Remmina v1.4.43 changelog and Remmina installation guides.
